Highlands Art Exhibit 2024

1. ELIGIBILITY
A. All adult entrants 18 years of age or older on August 4, 2024 will be classified in the Adult Category.
B. All youth artists under 18 years of age on August 4, 2024 will be entered into the Youth Category.
C. Employees and Trustees of the New Jersey Highlands Coalition, and their immediate family members, and employees and trustees of Maxfield Engine House and Boonton Preservation Project and their immediate family members, and jurists and judges of the competition and their immediate family members are not permitted to enter.
2. NUMBER OF IMAGES YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ENTER:
3. SALES, COMMISSIONS, PAYMENTS & PROCEEDS:
Artists are encouraged, but not required to offer their work for sale. If they chose to do so, proceeds will be split 70/30, with 70% of the sale price going to the artist and 30% going to the New Jersey Highlands Coalition. Artists will receive payment from sales proceeds thirty(30) days after the exhibit closes.
4. MEDIA & STYLE:
A. Artwork may be abstract or representational, and may include two- and three-dimensional paintings, drawings, pastels, original prints (lithographs, etchings, monoprints, serigraphs, monoprints etc.), mixed-media, fiber, sculptures, digital art and photographs, as well as 3-D and carving.
B. Photographs should not be heavily manipulated; only minor burning, dodging, contrast and color adjustments are permitted. Heavily manipulated photographs or digital art portions of photographs may be accepted as “mixed media”.
C. Abstract images are also accepted, as long as they are inspired by the New Jersey Highlands.
D. Images created with AI (Artificial Intelligence) will not be accepted.
5. SIZE
A. 2-DIMENSIONAL WORKS Must be framed, wired, and ready to hang or it will not be accepted. 2-dimensional work must be limited to 78 inches on its longest side, including frame.
B. 3-DIMENSIONAL WORKS (for example, sculpture or carvings) must be either free-standing or suitable for hanging:
6. SUBJECT & CONTENT:
A. Each submission must feature or be inspired by the flora, fauna, landscapes, natural, cultural or historic resources of the Highlands of New Jersey, NY, PA & CT, or flora and fauna typically found in the Highlands.

Images of individual plants and animals from outside of the Highlands will be accepted, as long as the species depicted is found within the Highlands Regions of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Please note that New Jersey’s Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is considered part of the New Jersey Highlands due to its location and any work featuring the Great Swamp will be accepted.
B. Submitted work must not contain any offensive, sexually explicit, or inappropriate content.
C. Work depicting any recognizable person or persons must be accompanied by a signed model release.
7. ART AVAILABILITY FOR ADDITIONAL EHXIBIT OPPORTUNITES:
This exhibit at Maxfield is a 3-month-long exhibit. If your art is accepted, you
may replace your work with an appropriate curator-approved piece.
A. Compton Gallery Exhibit: If the prize-winning award-winners (Grand Prize, First Place, and Second Place and Honorable Mentions in each category) are no longer available for the Compton Gallery exhibit, then the curator may ask those artists for acceptable substitutions. Dates and delivery details to be announced.
B. Other Entr’Exhibits: Selections will be curated from allpast Juried Exhibit submissions, regardless of whether they had been shown in previous Highlands exhibits.
8. OWNERSHIP, COPYRIGHT AND IMAGE USAGE
A. All work must be the property of the entrant; entrant must be the copyright owner and the work must not infringe on the rights of others.
B. Entrants will retain Copyrights to their works. Entrants acknowledge that, if their art is accepted and exhibited, they grant the Highlands Art, New Jersey Highlands Coalition, Boonton Preservation Project /Maxfield Engine House the right to reproduce, distribute, and display your art in connection with the exhibit, or for promotion of the exhibit on our websites, catalog, press releases and social media. Proper Copyright information will be included. You may rescind this permission at any time.

An artist statement. This can be brief, or up to three paragraphs, about your personal
connection to the Highlands, how you are inspired by the landscapes, the wildlife, the cultural and historic resources of the Highlands, how you discovered the Highlands, etc. Some optional suggestions perhaps include:

C. If your art is accepted, The following agreement will be required to be checked on the online entry form: I understand that I retain all rights to my images. If one or more of my images is selected by the juror of a Highlands Art exhibit, now or in the future, I hereby grant to Highlands Art, The NJ Highlands Coalition and Maxfield Engine House/Boonton Preservation Project the non-exclusive use of those images for the sole purposes of reproduction in the exhibit catalog; on the above respective organizations' social media and websites, and press releases. I agree that I am fully and solely responsible for the content of my images, including the reproduction of the likeness of recognizable individuals. I understand that I may rescind this agreement at any time.
5. DELIVERY & HANDLING OF ARTWORK
A. Accepted art must be dropped off and picked up at Maxfield’s Engine House during the dates and times provided (see Deadlines and Schedule, above).
B. All work must be wrapped, boxed or otherwise protected to enable easy transport.
C. Please use a reusable cardboard box, a reusable portfolio or a reusable bubble wrap pouch.
D. Please DO NOT use excessive amounts of packing tape; your packaging will be reused and handlers must be able to easily pack and unpack each piece.
E. All packaging will be retained at Compton gallery and returned with each artwork.

The firehouse is restored by the Boonton Preservation Project. It was constructed in 1893 and occupies a prominent location in the center of Boonton, NJ’s Main Street Historic District and has served a variety of functions since the town’s fire engines became too large to use it.
