"I initially became interested in photography while studying design and advertising in college. Beyond the use of images in ad media I was captivated by the B&W fine art photography of Paul Strand and Edward Weston as well as the documentary work of Bruce Davidson. Later I became familiar with the extensive photographic study that George Tice undertook with the city of Paterson. To this day I can sense their influence on my work. But, there are many other factors that have shaped my approach to photography including the corporate shooters who contributed to the visual impact of graphic design and design itself with regards to composition.
"I do not strictly limit myself in the subject matter I cover. While many of my images are related to urban settings I also enjoy being out in the natural world. My work is a matter of exploration and discovery. I prefer the slow pace of walking which allows me a better chance to observe things more carefully. I also spend a lot of time riding my bicycle and sometimes use my phone to take photos along the road
"As is the case anywhere in the world the character of a region will have an influence on the images you create. New Jersey’s natural beauty is plentiful throughout the state. I am particularly familiar with the Highlands region since I have lived here most of my life. The challenge for me is to capture the intimate quality of the small stories as I call them—the places that aren’t grand and majestic but have a subtler burnish to them."

Clinton Falls, in the heart of the NJ Highlands, is in the Newark Pequannock Watershed, which supplies drinking water to the city of Newark and surrounding towns. Newark purchased these lands near the beginning of the 20th century, and they remain remarkably pristine, considering how developed NJ became since that purchase. I love the fact that one can hardly tell what season we're in here due to the massive dominance of rock.

I was born and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. My college studies included both music and mathematics at Brooklyn and Columbia Colleges, and I started a career in Information Technology (IT) in 1964 in NY. I moved to Morristown in 1981.
On the artistic side, my photos have been exhibited in many local and regional art fairs and shows. I’m extremely proud of my participation in the 2019 Highlands art exhibit displayed here in the Morris Museum. My photo won “Best in Show.” My influences include Ansel Adams on the black and white side, and Elliot Porter on the color side, among many others. I’m finalizing my forthcoming book “New Jersey: Hidden Treasures,” which showcases my substantial body of work photographing the Highlands as well as almost every other region of NJ.
My location in Morristown gave me ready access to every corner of these beautiful parts of NJ. The resulting photos were used extensively in posters, flyers, books, websites, etc., to help dramatize the significance of the Highlands and why they needed to be preserved.
My photography extended north to Sterling Forest, just north of the NJ-NY state line. This near-pristine land was threatened with massive development which would have seriously compromised the drinking water of millions of NJ residents. One of my Sterling Forest photographs was published in the National Geographic magazine as they followed the progress of the preservation efforts. My photos have also appeared in publications of the Audubon Society, Trust for Public Land, NJ Conservation Foundation, Regional Plan Association, U.S. Forest Service Highlands studies, and many more.
In addition to my photography, my other interests include my partner, my two daughters and two grandchildren. I’m an avid choral singer, having sung with major concert choruses and orchestras in both NJ and NY. I sing with the Harmonium Choral Society, based in Madison.

The Black River meanders behind our home. It’s not deep and it’s not wide, but it provides me with a consummate location to capture a perfect sunset nearly every time I show up. Fueling my enthusiasm is the fact that every five minutes of everyday the sky changes; the reflections change.
I’ve arrived early and spent an hour, sometimes, under the bridge, waiting, watching, observing. I’ve arrived late and missed the color, but still managed to compose a worthwhile silhouette.
This photograph, “Moon Rising,” was a fortuitous opportunity. The moon reflected the sunset’s golden hue and thus appeared yellow, rather than white.
I take photographs. I paint and I sculpt and will profess and admit that I’m most inspired and impacted by nature. Living where I live, the nature I’m referring to is of course the NJ Highlands.
Canadian Fire Sky Over Anthony's NoseMitchell Brozinsky

ABOUT THIS PHOTO:
On the day of the Orange Sky from the Canadian fires, I decided to explore how the sky affected the look of the area, shooting around Harriman State Park, Perkins Drive in Bear Mountain Park, Garrison Landing and Cold Spring NY. Visibility was low, the particulate matter acting like fog. It was a stark reminder how connected everything is. I’ve since learned that climate change made the fire season around 50% more intense and wildfire seasons of this severity are at least seven times more likely to occur due to climate change. I am creating a photo book from that day.
I have spent much time at work and at play hiking and photographing the beautiful Highlands, including while scouting and managing
television shows and commercials, feature films, print advertising and fashion and music videos. I am grateful that my work has kept me behind the camera.

Since 1995, Mitchell has worked as location scout and manager for film, television and print productions, primarily within 2 hours of Manhattan, and beyond. He has worked with many directors, photographers and designers on Television shows and commercials, feature films, print advertising and fashion and music videos. He is grateful that his work has kept him behind the camera.
Mitchell has has spent much time at work and at play hiking and photographing the beautiful Highlands. He has often scouted and managed productions in the Hudson Highlands - including Stokes State Park in NJ, Hawks Nest in Port Jervis, Minnewaska State Park, Harriman State Park and up and down the Hudson River.
He has always had a love of nature and concern for the environment. In his first job out of college, he worked for the Hudson Clearwater Sloop organization and had a meeting with Pete Seeger at his home, whiere they sat outside on a log that Pete was making into a dugout canoe. ARTIST STATEMENT
I respond to nature. While I also respond to human environments, it is nature that really enthralls me! I am always grateful to be in the presence of natural beauty. Wilderness creates a sense of awe and wonder. Viewing nature, either from a high cliff with a vista, or with macro lens, provides me an endless source of visual inspiration. Through my photographs, I want to show you how wonderful the natural world is. Con't >
"The camera lens allows me to focus, highlight, isolate, and perhaps exaggerate aspects of the world as I see it. I try to put these elements into a visual form that communicates what I see to you. Even though I try hard to simplify scenes of nature into shapes, color, contrast and design, I also want you to feel the wonder and power of the natural world beyond the frame. I want you to catch your breath, be inspired and, with luck, share my experience of it.
"What succeeds, or not, is the basis for lively debate. There is no escaping the fact that my photographic styles can be eclectic. I love the 19th century Hudson River School painters who depict grand landscapes, atmospheric weather and light. I am also inspired by the photographic traditions of Ansel Adams and the Sierra Club.
"I am grateful to the pioneers of visual language. I learn from the different painting and photographic styles they create. Not only do they demonstrate unique ways of perception that sharpen my vision, but they also show me how to be even more alert to the wonders of the world around me."
BIO - CHARLES DEXTER
Charles Dexter’s work is inspired by the photographic traditions of the Sierra Club and his art history courses in college. He is self trained.
He joined the New York City Sierra Club Photography Committee in 1992. His photography is enriched by his continuing association with many of its members and the influence of their work. He is a past chairman of that group.
Charles developed a love for high places, wilderness, and the magic of photography as he explored the high cliffs of the Palisades, north of Alpine, New Jersey. Throughout the four seasons, he kept returning to the same mile and a half length of cliffs.
He sharpened his photographic eye by observing the slow, continuing transformation of light, foliage and weather on the unchanging rock formations over time. From these cliffs, he discovered a wealth of evolving nature to observe with his camera.
To this day Charles continues his photographic exploration of both vast and intimate landscapes found in the Hudson and Delaware River valley wilderness regions. Since taking an Outward Bound course in Colorado, he also photographs with great passion in the American West.
His solo photography exhibits at Berkeley College in New York City, and at the Greenbrook Sanctuary in Tenafly, NJ, were well received. He also exhibited in many of the NYC Sierra Club Photography Committee group shows.
Charles Dexter’s photographs have been published in Audubon Magazine and by the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club. His work is also featured on CD album covers for Sonoton Music Productions. He photographed dance performances for Serena Mid East Dance Theater and Multigravitational Aero Dance Group.
He works as a freelance music and sound effects editor for video and film. He graduated from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in filmmaking and cinematography.

As a freelance commercial photographer with a deep-rooted passion for visual storytelling, I find beauty and intrigue in the world around me.
My formal art education began with Ball State University’s BFA program in Visual Communications and concluded with a degree in Advertising Art at Seton Hall.
As a product and portrait photographer, on staff at a major food company for over a decade, I had the opportunity to work in a dynamic professional environment, developing the skills necessary to capture the essence of a brand and its people.
After turning freelance I began to explore personal interests. That led to interpreting the beauty of nature through the lens, implementing my studio skills to capture the intricate details of native and naturalized plants found within my local community in Morris County. My subjects are commonplace but I strive to capture the outward and intrinsic beauty often overlooked and elevate the ordinary through lighting and perspective.
My segue into the fine art world began with acceptance to the Highlands Photography Guild and the opportunity to exhibit in their Milford, PA gallery. While my commercial work continues to be a significant part of my artistic journey, I also find solace and inspiration in my own backyard. Beauty at our fingertips is a daily reminder of the profound connection between our lives, the environment we inhabit, and the spirituality within us all.

"One of my favorite spots in the autumn is Harriman State Park, especially this area which has lily pads with amazing reflections with the colors of autumn. This reminds me of Giverny and Claude Monet's paintings of lily pads. You can photograph here from mid October to the beginning of November. As the foliage changes day to day you can get amazing and colorful images almost on a daily basis.
"Even as a young child, I always loved to draw, paint and later on love to take photographs. I find cityscapes and landscapes most interesting. My love for art and the impressionists such as Claude Monet can be seen in my photographs. My technique is simple, get up early and photograph the early light, this can be both for my landscapes and my cityscapes. You can always sleep later. Just enjoy what you’re doing. With today’s technology, you can take photographs early in the morning, while making your breakfast you can download your photos, process, print, frame and hang your photos all by lunchtime. "

The challenge for a photographer is to breathe life into a two-dimensional image – to make it appear to the viewer that the original scene is before them. It is through the skillful use of light, contrast, color, and composition that an image takes on depth and dimension allowing the viewer to experience the emotion that compelled the photographer to make the image.
Growing up in the mountains of Virginia, I often explored the woodlands and streams near my home. I developed a love of nature and the outdoors at a young age. Moving to New Jersey, I discovered the beauty of the Highlands and the many streams to be explored there. I still enjoy nothing more than a day hiking along a woodland stream to a secluded waterfall and for me, there is no place more peaceful. In my photography, I strive to create images that allow me to revisit these special places and share the experience with others. I want to feel that I could reach into the image and touch the leaves or feel the water rushing by. These streams are a precious resource that needs to be preserved and protected for all to enjoy.
Mike Williams is a nature and landscape photographer living in Central New Jersey. Mike started doing photography in his early teens. Using his grandfather's enlarger, trays, and safelight, he set up a darkroom and learned to do his own B&W developing. In high school, he photographed events for the school newspaper and discovered a love for photographing landscapes and architecture on a trip to Italy. Over the years since that time, Mike has continued to work on his skills as a photographer. He is now retired from a career in pharmaceutical research and enjoys photographing nature while hiking the trails and kayaking the many lakes and rivers of New Jersey.
Mike’s images are recognized for their serene peaceful nature and have been selected for the healing art programs of several New Jersey hospitals and clinics. His work has also appeared in juried exhibitions and galleries in New Jersey including the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council Gallery in Newton, the Marie L. Matthews Gallery in Princeton, Gallery 14 in Hopewell, the 70 South and Atrium Galleries, and the Morris Museum in Morristown. His work has won awards in the Light, Space, and Time Online Art Gallery and the Colors of Humanity Gallery exhibitions, the Xpose Regional Juried Photography Exhibit, the Hillsborough Cultural & Arts Commission Art & Photo Exhibit, and the New Jersey State Senior Art Show. Mike received a special recognition award in the Manhattan Arts International exhibition: The Healing Power of Art "Inspiring the Positive".

"My name is Benjamin Janis. I am 13 years old and live in Rockaway, NJ. I have always loved nature and my favorite photos are usually of water including the ocean. My photos have been on display in the Roxbury and Whippany libraries. I am a 4-H member and in clubs including Shutterbugs Photography, Teen Council and the STEM Science Club. This photo was taken on a Shutterbugs photo walk.
"My photography, wherever it is taken, starts with what will be seen first. The bigger picture. As someone views the photo more closely then before they may notice more details then there are initially thought to be. As my skill in photography evolved, so have the ways I took my photos. It's safe to say that I have grown a lot in my photography and I hope to continue taking more photos all around New Jersey. "

"I took this photograph of a Great Blue Skimmer at the Great Swamp Observation Center. It was a hot day and a reward for stepping out of the shade and into the sun was this photograph."

"I was inspired to create this piece because of the wide range of wildlife that is native to the New York area. I am from New Jersey and wanted to look at animals that were not typically seen in my area. I chose to do a moose specifically because I wanted to show their large presence within the Upstate New York area. I also find it interesting how large they are, and wanted to capture that in my piece. I used pastel pencils to create the moose and used acrylic for the background."
