ARTIST STATEMENT
"I translate the beauty of nature through my art, using whatever media strikes me as fulfilling the message in the moment. I have most recently used steam-dyed canvas or paper as well as cyanotype overcoated with encaustic to share the forms and colors of nature."
North Jersey’s Lisa Madson grew up spending tons of time outdoors exploring lakes, rivers, and the shore. As she grew older, she realized the profound impact that her direct contact with nature had on her. This appreciation for the natural world is reflected in her artwork, which incorporates elements such as leaves, bark, embroidery thread, beads, shells, silkscreen on canvas, and cyanotype on paper with wax. Through her art, Madson hopes to share her love of nature with the world and to promote conservation efforts for the earth, which sustains us all.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is often based on traditional or personal themes which I repeatedly explore. I work with themes and subjects which I experience emotionally whether they are poignant or mundane. My goal is to transform these experiences into expressive abstract images. Influenced by Latin American authors of Magic Realism, my paintings are meant to evoke emotions and intensify memory by compressing time and space. They are unfinished stories that that evolve, completed by the viewer's associations.
PROCESS - How I make art
When an idea or image captures my imagination, I save it in a sketch. If an idea has potential, I develop it using more sketches and collages. I use collage as a means for expression and discovery, it helps me find what I otherwise might not imagine.
Using ink and watercolor on rice paper fragments I build a vocabulary of abstract parts. I use the parts to find the images and build the composition. My work is the product of many decisions. It is through my choices that I find and express myself. I value honesty and transparency as I make these choices.
I favor intuition, improvisation and accidental discovery while composing. As the image develops the parts are glued into place to form a structure for the painting. The collage may be part of a painting or the subject of a painting.Casein, oil paint or Flashe are used to create the painting on linen, canvas, or wood.
SUBJECTS - What do I paint?
My goal is to transform the experience of poignant events into expressive abstract images. Although motivated by personal experience, my paintings build on our shared memory of poignant places and experiences. The images in my work are invented using memory and imagination but they are based on experience.

ARTIST INFO
Michael McFadden is a fine artist, master craftsman, and educator. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mr. McFadden studied at Carleton College, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin where he received his MFA.
In 1978 he established an art studio and fine furniture workshop in the Tribeca area of New York City. In 1987 Michael and his wife Doris Ettlinger, also an artist and educator, moved their studios to an 18th Century grist mill in western New Jersey where they raised their two children, Ivy and Benjamin. Recently Michael retired from teaching engineering, architecture, and fine art at Hunterdon Central High School.
Michael’s images are inventions based on memory and imagination. He transforms his personal experience of poignant events and shared experiences into abstract images. Michael’s paintings are constructed from a personalized vocabulary of marks and shapes. He creates a visual environment that invites exploration. His color harmonies, composition, and calligraphic brush work result in expressive, high contrast images that engage the viewer through shared impressions and experience. (con't)
East Meets West at Cedar Lake
Jack R. Moore
linoleum block print
18"h x 14"w
$200
ARTIST STATEMENT
A full moon illuminates this familiar boat landing where the two main roads of Cedar Lake West and Cedar Lake East meet up. It’s an homage to the ancient Eastern art of Japanese Wood Block printing. Blue-ish moon lit scenes are common subject matter in this tradition. Using the more modern Western technique of carved Linoleum block printing, this image merges the two worlds depicted on a serene summer evening.

Jack R. Moore is inspired by familiar places captured at the magical moments of twilight and dawn, Moore pushes his artistic vision - contemporary realism bordering on surreal - yet keeps the spirit and warmth of memories experienced or imagined. He explores still life interiors with exterior views that invite a narrative evoking reminiscences of the past with rich detail. These popular images have been exhibited in a long running solo show as well as several group shows.
Moore grew up in both Hoboken and Sussex county, New Jersey. On weekends and during summers, his mom and dad built their house in Byram by themselves. As a city kid, being exposed to the country was a wonderful experience. Days filled with playing in the wooded hills and streams left a lasting impression and an appreciation for natural wonders. This experience is what informs his art. He currently resides in Morris county.
Moore is the recipient of several prestigious graphic design and illustration awards, creating images for the advertising and publishing industry for over 35 years. In his formative period as a traditional painter, Moore’s media of choice was acrylic paint on canvas and board. He progressed to develop a unique combination of electronic brush painting and 3D digital modeling. Not a quick technique, but effective in creating the highly detailed imagery that emanates from Moore’s fertile imagination. [see “Golden Hour” and “Morning Call”]
Currently, Moore seeks to create artwork with a more physically hands-on process. He is exploring Linoleum block carving and printing with a hand press. The imagery is simplified using the Japanese design concept Notan, breaking an image down to its essence using just 2 to 4 values and still being recognizable. This is the polar opposite of his extremely detailed, digital 3D modeling technique. [see “East Meets West at Cedar Lake”]

ARTIST STATEMENT
"All of us can identify with art that simulate nature," Phyllis Lloyd writes.
As an artist, I am fascinated with the uniqueness of the beauty and power of nature.
In the "Waxwing,” I tried to capture the moment the Waxwing is enjoying eating the dogwood fruit; in the "Speedwell Dam Waterfall,” I tried to capture the dam stone structure and the power of moving water against the Autumn scenery.
In each painting, the viewer is invited to take the time to examine each subject matter. A great deal of attention and time was spent to make the main subject as realistic and detailed as possible. Once the viewer is drawn into the main subject, one will become aware of the fascinating background parts of the watercolor painting, for example, in "Waxwing,” one is invited to enjoy the power and beauty of autumn colors in the dogwood tree‘s leaves and berries; in the "Speedwell Dam Waterfall,” the power of nature is expressed in the water rushing through the waterfall and the rhythm of the rippling water down below.
As the viewer keeps on looking, the realization of the other areas of the painting becomes more fascinating: in the "Waxwing,” the soft shapes of the leaves in the background give an illusion of trees; in the "Speedwell Dam Waterfall,” the soft lines and shapes of the trees in the background give an appearance of late autumn.
As an artist, I try to make all parts of my work complement each other and coexist as one to create a cohesive work of art. To create dynamic color combinations, I have chosen to work with complementary colors in my watercolor paintings. In the "Waxwing,” I used red and green, whereas in the "Speedwell Dam Waterfall,” I used blue and orange. The use of the complementary colors has created a visual stimulation and gives power to the colors to vibrate in my artwork. The use of tints, tones, and shades of the complementary colors throughout my paintings have created mood and movement.
As an artist, I believe that we cannot ever run out of ideas when we draw from nature.

ARTIST STATEMENT - SUSAN ROTH
In my professional work as a psychologist, I pay attention to people’s words: to patterns, background, and foreground and to the line and color of their stories. I go to the Highlands of New Jersey, tend to the patterns; background and foreground; and line and color, and without words, I paint what I see and feel, and that becomes my story.

ARTIST STATEMENT - Ground Series
Ground is part of an ongoing series of works using soils as my pigment and elevating soil to its aesthetic form revealing its true beauty.
Ground is a series of artworks centered on the often-over-looked soil that we walk on, harvest from, and excavate. The word’s origin ‘grund’, is Old English meaning foundation or base.
Soil- the surface of the earth is a link between the rock core and all that lives on it. But, we have become estranged from soil, separated from food production and the culture that surrounds it. We are often only interested in what soil can provide to us through ownership, and extraction, disregarding it, mistreating it and exploiting it.
Each piece of art for the Ground series is on archival supports, using professional artist-grade materials. I prepare stable and adhesive painting pigment entirely from local soils . Pure soil samples are ground using a pestle and mortar and then used in these paintings. The paintings are then varnished and sealed to prevent any erosion of the surface ('spalling'). The method of working is sustainable. These paintings focus on the powerful visual impact of the varied colors and textures found in a selection of different local soils.
“... the soil of any one place makes its own peculiar and inevitable sense. It is impossible to contemplate the life of the soil for very long without seeing it as analogous to the life of the spirit.” - Wendell Berry (1977), The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture.
Ground is a process of discovery and exploration for me as a scientist and as an artist.

BIOGRAPHY
Born and educated in England, Mary Waltham is a biologist and environmental artist living in Princeton NJ. Her previous career was in international scientific and medical publishing. She recently completed a degree in Fine Art. Mary’s work reflects a powerful interest in expressing the fragility of our environment as seen through the eyes of both scientist and artist. Mary works in a variety of 2D and 3D media, and a range of formats, often collecting and incorporating landscape materials such as oil, bark, moss, and wood in her works. Mary wants to bring the landscape to life and so to spark new conversations about our shared environment. Her recent series Ground, using soil as painting pigment, includes soils from across New Jersey including the Highlands.

'Both Dwarf Wedge Mussel and Yellow Perch can be found in the Delaware River. But whereas the freshwater Dwarf Wedge Mussel is 'critically imperiled' and 'federally endangered', Yellow Perch is widespread and a favored catch for fishermen.
Water pollution, including sediments and chemicals from agriculture and other development projects such as golf courses,
have been implicated in this mussel's decline.'
