ARTIST STATEMENT
“I’ve been following a Spiritual Practice for most of my life. My website is called allowinglight.com. My aesthetic intention is to let go and allow myself to perceive the beauty in the light that leads us within to experience the Divine Essence that is all around. It is found in dramatic vistas, or light falling on a few leaves. My art is a journey of exploration and discovery and to reveal and share my vision with others.”
-- Mitchell Brozinsky

ARTIST INFORMATION
Jared Clackner is a plein-air landscape artist. Plein-air describes artists who paint outdoors. He is inspired by working on location as a way to convey the peace and tranquility of nature. Jared travels to many parts of the country in pursuit of the perfect landscape. Painting the subtle colors of light and shadow, he simplifies the subject to its most poetic form. The serene environments produced by Jared’s thoughtful paint application and strong design invites the viewer to explore the world through his eyes.
Jared was born in Ohio in 1961. He studied advertising arts at Spectrum Institute in New Jersey. After graduating, Jared worked in freelance illustration and graphic design for several years.
In 1990, Jared decided to pursue a career as a plein-air landscape artist. Over the next five years, he studied privately with contemporary American landscape painters, Clyde Aspevig and Skip Whitcomb.
In 1994, Jared began teaching at the Ridgewood Art Institute, as well as private instruction from his own studio, and has also served as an assistant instructor to Skip Whitcomb at plein- air workshops.
Jared’s paintings have been included in exhibitions all over the United States and he has had several one man shows. He maintains his studio in northern New Jersey where he lives with his wife and two adult children.

ARTIST STATEMENT
"My goal is to produce art that is alive, not static and creates a drama, a feeling of a slice of life. My purpose is to capture creating sense of life and movement through color, light and multiple centers of interest. Taking advantage of the medium and the effect of water, the white of the paper, and the different kinds washes, transparent against opaque passages with a fluid bold strokes that appear organic and true. That is the joy of watercolor, and what makes it different and more exciting than other media.
"Basically I am a colorist and realist, who works in several media and sees each subject as a puzzle, using different approaches, colors, and surfaces to create the best version of a subject. Painting is a puzzle of design, color and value to create a work that captures light and mood. When I work on location in watercolor as in Early Summer, I choose a palette even brushes so I can work quickly, and capture the fleeting light and the nuances of color. "
- - Mark de Mos

ARTIST STATEMENT
"Remember, look ahead, look up, look down, look left, look right, don’t forget to look behind, there is always something to photograph.”
"Photography allows me to recreate the natural world in the way that I see it and to share it with other people. While I try to isolate and simplify scenes from nature into shapes, color and design, I still want the viewer to feel the wonder and power of the world outside of the frame.
"The world is a magnificent place, full of unexpected sources of beauty. We are very fortunate to be living in it. Despite all of the turmoil in the world, we look for our own unique experiences to fill our existence. Being truly alive requires our full focus and attention.
"Our experiences can be beautiful or ugly depending on what our circumstances are and what we make of them. People respond to different aspects of the world in different ways. Some people are stimulated by human made environments while others respond to nature. Some people are stimulated by the clash!
"I respond to nature. While I also respond to human environments, it is nature that really enthralls me! I am always grateful to be in the presence of natural beauty. Wilderness creates a sense of awe and wonder. Viewing nature, either from a high cliff with a vista, or with macro lens, provides me an endless source of visual inspiration. Through my photographs, I want to show you how wonderful the natural world is.
"The camera lens allows me to focus, highlight, isolate, and perhaps exaggerate aspects of the world as I see it. I try to put these elements into a visual form that communicates what I see to you. Even though I try hard to simplify scenes of nature into shapes, color, contrast and design, I also want you to feel the wonder and power of the natural world beyond the frame. I want you to catch your breath, be inspired and, with luck, share my experience of it.
"Sometimes scenes in nature remind me of famous paintings I've seen in art history classes that have made a vivid impression on me. Each artist sees the world in a different way. By using techniques of craft, color and composition, artists try to find a visual language to express that way of seeing. Some artists are successful pioneers of visual language, while others work beautifully with accepted ways of communication.
"What succeeds, or not, is the basis for lively debate. There is no escaping the fact that my photographic styles are eclectic. I love the 19th century Hudson River School painters who depict grand landscapes, atmospheric weather and light. This famous Catskill Mountain view has been painted and sketched by Thomas Cole, Jasper Francis Cropsey and Sanford Robison Gifford. I am also inspired by the photographic traditions of Ansel Adams and the Sierra Club.
"However, I also find impressionist painters, who create a ‘soft focus’ effect, exciting. In this photograph of a cherry tree blossoming in New York City, the technique of multi-exposure in the camera reduces the realistic details of the scene to color, texture and form.
"Abstract painters make canvases that are purely about color, shapes and texture. They aren't trying to represent anything in the natural world. Yet abstract forms and patterns do exist in nature. An example can be seen on this lichen covered rock face along a trail in Colorado.
""I am grateful to the pioneers of visual language. I learn from the different painting and photographic styles they create. Not only do they demonstrate unique ways of perception that sharpen my vision, they show me how to be even more alert to the wonders of the world around me.
Our world is full of exciting places and things that exist in changing weather and light. We are fortunate there are so many ways to see it all."
ARTIST INFORMATION
Charles Dexter’s work is inspired by the photographic traditions of the Sierra Club and his art history courses in college. He is self trained. He joined the New York City Sierra Club Photography Committee in 1992. His photography is enriched by his continuing association with many of its members and the influence of their work. He is a past chairman of that group. Charles developed a love for high places, wilderness, and the magic of photography as he explored the high cliffs of the Palisades, north of Alpine, New Jersey. Throughout the four seasons, he kept returning to the same mile and a half length of cliffs. He sharpened his photographic eye by observing the slow, continuing transformation of light, foliage and weather on the unchanging rock formations over time. From these cliffs, he discovered a wealth of evolving nature to observe with his camera. To this day Charles continues his photographic exploration of both vast and intimate landscapes found in the Hudson and Delaware River valley wilderness regions. Since taking an Outward Bound course in Colorado, he also photographs with great passion in the American West.
His solo photography exhibits at Berkeley College in New York City, and at the Greenbrook Sanctuary in Tenafly, NJ, were well received. He also exhibited in many of the NYC Sierra Club Photography Committee group shows. Charles Dexter’s photographs have been published in Audubon Magazine and by the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club. -His work is also featured on CD album covers for Sonoton Music Productions. He photographed dance performances for Serena Mid East Dance Theater and Multigravitational Aero Dance Group. He works as a freelance music and sound effects editor for video and film. He graduated from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in filmmaking and cinematography.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Todd talks about his painting style and techniques, inspirations and career.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“Nature has been a vehicle of artists throughout the ages to express themselves and it is the impetus of my work as well. To be more precise, the nature that has inspired the majority of my work is the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge which is situated adjacent to my home. Many of the images that form my work are inspired by hikes, dog walks, bike rides, and drives through the swamp.
“The titles of my work depict the exact moment that I viewed the scene. For example: “Swamp, Feb 27, 5:03PM”. My paintings are an attempt to freeze in time nature’s ephemeral flux and their titles suggest that. Nature is fleeting and constantly changing. Not only seasonally and daily, but even hourly. Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote, 'All things are flowing' and 'You cannot step into the same river twice....'. The inspiration for “Swamp, Feb 27, 5:03PM” was viewed just inside the Great Swamp on my way to work.” -- Todd Doney

ARTIST STATEMENT
"Nature is ubiquitous and the Highlands offer the perfect example of being surrounded by a thriving plant and animal environment. Be it a lichen or a group of ducks, life amazes.
"For 56 years photography has been a quiet, personal passion unencumbered by the pressure to exhibit or sell my work, hence most of it has never been seen by anyone. Today, I share.
"Observing life is an art. With camera in hand and a Zen mindset, I occasionally compose and capture an enduring picture. Weeks, months, even years after taking a shot, I will revisit that print with a more objective eye. Memories of place, surroundings, atmosphere, circumstances and people flood back as there is now so much more to see. Each photo must meet my own subjective and fluid criteria. Is it aesthetic? Does it ooze a special aura? Does the face reveal emotion? Is there humor or whimsy? Is it absurd? Is it unique? Is it good? To each onlooker, the answers are different.
"For more than 40 years I shot in black and white using a twin-lens Rolleiflex – a fine, relatively heavy, medium-format, manual camera that produces exceptional 2-1/4 inch square negatives or slides. Each roll of film offers only 12 exposures before I have to reload. Traveling with dozens of rolls and the Rollei posed so many problems when passing through security at airports, both foreign and domestic. X-rays could ruin weeks of work, while overly curious security people sometimes insisted that I open every box of film and demonstrate that the camera was real by snapping the shutter or opening the back! About six years ago, these challenges ultimately forced me to leave my Rollei behind in favor of a very small digital camera and my iPhone. To be a good photographer, one must master techniques, understand light, composition, focal depth and a myriad of other things that become so deeply ingrained that the process of taking the picture becomes completely spontaneous. All that matters is the image.
"I am inherently curious and aware of my surroundings and told that I notice things that others do not. To me, nature is sublime. I may be one of the missing Transcendentalists from the 19th century! Some ever-morphing categories of my work include street scenes and street people, indoor shots, abstracts, nature, landscapes, objects, animals, portraits and even a rare self-portrait. But these genres are hardly pure and usually overlap, blending and creating other hybrid groups.
"One measure of a photograph's appeal is whether it provokes a reaction. The visceral chemistry that sparks between the image and the observer is deeply personal, the moment when image and life communicate."

ARTIST STATEMENT
“I have been a regular visitor to the woodlands around Boonton, New Jersey since moving here eight years ago. Actually, the woodlands played a central part in that decision. For longer than I can remember, these tranquil yet dynamic areas have helped me reconnect with myself, especially when I lived in more urban areas. Making photographs has been a way of recording the wholeness I feel in the woods, surrounded by natural cycles of life and death. Photographs are also an excuse for working with one of my favorite materials: paper. These prints are made on one of my favorites, Arches Text, an uncoated fine art paper with a beautiful texture not covered up by an inkjet coating. These papers do require special attention in the digital printing process.”
Edward Fausty is a photographer and printmaker specializing in collotype and digital pigment printing on fine papers. His relationship to the medium began long ago when he was given a roll film camera at the age of four and began darkroom work at the age of eleven.
Deeply influenced by his undergraduate work with Joel Meyerowitz at The Cooper Union and graduate work with Richard Benson at Yale University, his direction and evolution over the decades has been largely independent of these early academic influences, resulting in numerous distinct but concentrated bodies of work all visible on www.edwardfausty.com : scanned polaroid negatives of sprouting plants; progressively blurred self portraits (collotypes) printed on a letterpress; pictures made with a view camera from within an incubator; mountains of north central Norway; artists’ studios at a factory in Jersey City; views of the land and sky at night; and intimate/global circular views of the forest. In all these projects, the print and paper have anchored the work in the classic tradition of the fine print.
Fausty’s work is represented in such collections as The Canadian Center for Architecture, The George Eastman House, The U.S. Library of Congress, Pfizer Corporation, Yale University and others. He has exhibited work at Princeton University (Atelier Fellowship with Accra Shepp), The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Gallery Bi Damas in Japan, Paul Sharpe, DM Contemporary and Carter Burden Galleries in New York City, The World Theatre Festival in Nancy, France, and Inquiry Art Gallery in Boonton, New Jersey. His series Next Frontier: the Land and the Night Sky has been featured at the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, the Lewis K. Meisel Gallery in New York City, and the Visual Arts Center of NJ. Fausty has also received NYFA and NEA fellowships working with Brian Rose on a project documenting Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

ARTIST STATEMENT"Inspired by the intertwining of the hard and soft landscape of New Jersey’s Highands, my images capture native botanicals to illustrate the lyrical element of familiar organic forms. These images reflect my state of mind, a New Jersey state of mind: appreciate ‘place’ and recognize beauty in day-to-day life.” -- Bruce Frazier

ARTIST STATEMENT
“This was on a long hike in the Ramapo Mountains. The scenery was spectacular, magical, and inspiring, but at a certain point, I realized just how far I had to go to get back to my car. That gave me the title “Miles to Go”. As tiring as it was, I enjoyed every minute out there.” -- Joe Kazimierczyk
A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Joe Kazimierczyk (Joe Kaz for short) lives on the Sourland Mountain near Neshanic Station and finds much of his inspiration in the area immediately surrounding his home. Having always been drawn to the beauty of nature, Joe finds most of his subject matter on the hiking and bicycling trips that he loves to take - whether near his home, or further afield. His painting is a natural extension of his ramblings and explorations of the countryside. His most recent work reflects his interest in exploring the mountains and forests of northern New Jersey and beyond. Joe has earned his accolades as a self-taught artist and has been exhibiting his work extensively for over 18 years.

ARTIST STATEMENT
"Highlands Region is like that neighborhood woods you had growing up. You and your best friends would take to the woods to discover creeks, moss-covered trees and rocks to climb You walked and walked just to explore. The Highlands offer remarkable walking, exploring and surprises season after season. During a winter season, I photograph what the ice has captured that day. " -- Phil Marzo
Phil Marzo heads a marketing firm for small businesses. He photographs 50 small towns and photo spots each year. This summer he continues a photo book on kids laughing.
