The Highlands is a geophysical province, a component of the Appalachian Mountains, spanning western CT, southern NY, northern NJ, and eastern PA. In NJ, the region has an astonishing diversity of landscapes, including the rolling farm fields of Warren and Hunterdon counties, river communities along the Delaware, a vast, ecologically healthy forest, rich in biodiversity, north of I-80, and both rural and urban communities rich in pre-Revolutionary history.
Several factors have protected these landscapes from the uncoordinated development that much of NJ has experienced including: the passage of the 2004 Highlands Act; the State’s focused investment in Highlands open space, and historic and farmland preservation; and the century-old development of reservoir systems to serve NJ’s eastern cities. The natural settings of the Ramapo Mountains, that once inspired artists of the Hudson River School, look very much the same today―just one example of the uncomparable natural beauty of NJ’s Highlands.
The Annual Highlands Juried Art Exhibit is a celebration of the region’s natural beauty and the artists who are inspired by it.
The exhibit is curated by Donna Compton, gallerist and Art Program Curator for the NJ Highlands Coalition, and juried by a panel of prominent local arts professionals including: exhibit founder Dwight Hiscano, Dr. Ginny Butera, Elliott Ruga, Donna Compton, Dick Eger, Mitchell Rosenzweig, Paul Jach, Kristy Brucale Jach, and John Castronovo. Artists are offered an opportunity to reach a broad audience. Prize money totaling $1,200 will be awarded. , For exhibit information visit https://www.highlandsart.org
