10TH ANNUAL HIGHLANDS JURIED ART EXHIBIT
At the Hedley Gallery, Morris Museum, A Smithsonian Affiliate
6 Normandy Park Rd, Morristown, NJ
October 20 – November 26, 2023
Reception & Awards October 19, 5;30-8:30 p.m.
1. ELIGIBILITY
A) All entrants 18 years of age or older on July 9, 2023 will be classified in the Adult Category.
B) All artists under 18 years of age on July 9, 2023 will be entered into the Youth Category.
C) Employees and Trustees of the New Jersey Highlands Coalition and their immediate family members, employees and trustees of the Morris Museum and immediate family members, jurists and judges of the competition and their immediate family members are not permitted to enter.
2. SALES, COMMISSIONS, PAYMENTS & PROCEEDS
Artists are encouraged, but not required to offer their work for sale. If they chose to do so, proceeds will be split 70/30, with 70% of the sale price going to the artist and 30% going to the New Jersey Highlands Coalition. Artists will receive payment from sales proceeds thirty days after the exhibit closes.
3. FEES
A) ADULTS (age 18 and older): You may enter up to six (6) images. The fee to enter the Adult Category is $10.00 total for the first THREE (3) images, and $5 for each additional image.
B) YOUTH: There is no fee for entering the Youth Category. Youth may submit up to 3 images.

4. IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS
Initial entries must be in digital format, specifically jpg. See detailed instructions on HOW TO ENTER page.
5. MEDIA & STYLE
A) Artwork may be abstract or non-abstract, and may include two- and three-dimensional paintings, drawings, pastels, original prints (lithographs, etchings, monoprints, serigraphs, monoprints etc.), mixed-media, sculptures and photographs (see item B, below), as well as 3-D and carving.
B) PHOTOGRAPHS must not be heavily manipulated; only minor burning, dodging, contrast and color adjustments are permitted. Heavily manipulated photographs or portions of photographs may be accepted as “mixed media” only if another medium is employed in the same piece.
C) Abstract images are also accepted, as long as they are inspired by the New Jersey Highlands.
D) Images created with AI (Artificial Intelligence) will not be accepted.
6. SIZE
A) 2-DIMENSIONAL WORK must be framed, wired, with D-rings, and ready to hang or it will not be accepted. 2-dimensional work must be limited to 48 inches on its longest side when framed.
B) 3-DIMENSIONAL WORK (sculpture or carvings) must be either free-standing or suitable for hanging.
- IF HANGING the work may protrude 4 inches or less from the wall when hung, with a maximum weight of ten (10) pounds.
- FREE-STANDING SCULPTURE AND CARVING must not exceed twenty four (24 )inches in any direction, including a base (if applicable) with a maximum weight of ten (10) pounds. The Museum will provide pedestals and install sculptures inside protective cases.
7. SUBJECT & CONTENT
A) Each submission must feature or be inspired by the flora, fauna, landscapes, natural, cultural or historic resources of the Highlands of New Jersey, or flora and fauna typically found in the NJ Highlands.
WHERE EXACTLY ARE THE HIGHLANDS?
Images of individual plants and animals from outside of the Highlands will be accepted, as long as the species depicted is found within the Highlands Regions of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Please note that New Jersey’s Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is considered part of the New Jersey Highlands due to its location and any work featuring the Great Swamp will be accepted.
B) Submitted work must not contain any offensive, sexually explicit, or inappropriate content.
C) Work depicting any recognizable person or persons must be accompanied by a signed model release https://www.gram.edu/mytop5/docs/ModelRelease.pdf.
8. ART AVAILABILITY FOR ADDITIONAL EHXIBIT OPPORTUNITES
If the three prize-winning award-winners (Grand Prize, First Place, and Second Place in each category) are no longer available for auxiliary exhibits, then the curator may ask artists for substitutions. The pieces selected for auxiliary exhibits must be delivered framed, wired, and ready to hang by the designated dates (to be announced).
9. OWNERSHIP, COPYRIGHT AND IMAGE USAGE
A) All work must be the property of the entrant; entrant must be the copyright owner and the work must not infringe on the rights of others.
B) Images of any artist’s work art used by the NJHC or the Morris Museum shall credit the artist
C) Entrants will retain copyrights to their work. Entrants acknowledge, however, that by entering this competition, they grant the New Jersey Highlands Coalition the right to reproduce, distribute, and display all work submitted in any form in connection with the exhibit, or for promotion of the
exhibit.
D) Entrants are required to sign a Morris Museum media release form. (We will provide this upon acceptance). Full credit will accompany any image used for these purposes.
